Sternberg, R. J. (2009). Toward a triarchic theory of human intelligence. In J. C. Kaufman, E. L. Grigorenko (Eds.) , The essential Sternberg: Essays on intelligence, psychology, and education (pp. 33-70). New York, NY US: Springer (Brualdi,1996). Spearman used factor analysis to show that the positive correlations among mental tests indeed resulted from a common underlying factor. But positive correlations can arise for many reasons unrelated to a general factor . Intelligence is Not a single overall ability , but several distinct abilities.......

R. Sternberg was the first to compare the problematics of two symposia on the subject, held in 1921 and 1986. It turned out that both in the first and second half of the century, higher mental functions (conceptual thinking, ability to solve problems, etc.) were considered among the essential features by which intelligence was defined; the major topics for discussions were also similar and touched upon the unity or plurality of intelligence, the definition of the intelligence concept. At the same time, Sternberg notes that the study of intelligence during the 20th century reveals the trend of transition from psychometric issues to the study of information processes in the sociocultural context (Sternberg, 2004).
